Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Armah Ashitey has charged city authorities to vigorously enforce their sanitation by-laws. He wants residents who defecate in unapproved places to be arrested and prosecuted. He has also cautioned against food vending along drains. The minister who visited some areas badly affected by cholera, said as part of efforts to end the epidemic, massive clean-up exercises will be conducted weekly, starting this Saturday. Since it broke in January, the disease has claimed about 70 lives with nearly 6,000 cases reported at hospitals. Doctors are cautioning against certain eating habits as a research by the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital reveals over 80 per cent of cholera patients who visited the hospital became ill after drinking contaminated sachet water.
