A uniformed policeman who went wild when he was caught smoking Indian hemp with his girlfriend at the Korle Gonno Beach in Accra has been arrested for assaulting his colleagues who tried to bring him to order.
Constable Richard Nyameke of the Rapid Response Unit attached to the Kaneshie Police Station and his girlfriend, Eunice Nyaneku, 20, were spotted at about 5:30 p.m. last Friday having a “good time” with rolls of ‘wee’ at the beach.
A source told the Daily Graphic that alarmed by the wisps of smoke emanating from the mouths and nostrils of Richard and Eunice, two other policemen in mufti approached the couple and advised them to stop the act.
Richard and his girlfriend, however, did not take kindly to the counsel and engaged their advisors in a chaotic argument.
As tempers flared, Richard, assisted by Eunice, pounced on the policemen and severely assaulted them with broken bottles, leaving them with bruises.
According to the source, the victims were assisted by bar attendants at the beach to overpower Richard and Eunice and sent them to the Korle-Bu Police Station.
But matters did not end there, as Eunice resisted arrest at the police station and tore the attire of one police officer before she was overpowered and put it into cells.
The source said some rolls of the substance were found in Richard's pocket when a search was conducted on him at the police station.
"The Korle-Bu Police Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Mrs) Christiana Attenang, confirmed the story and said her outfit was seeking clearance from the Police Headquarters to enable it to deal with the case.
She said, however, that Eunice had been processed before a district magistrate court in Accra and had been remanded for two weeks.
