The recent double disaster that hit Japan is likely to make it difficult for Ghanaians to get rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, the kind that keeps mobile phones or laptops working.
This is because about half of the world’s rechargeable batteries are produced in the Japanese city of Fukushima which has been badly affected by the earthquake and tsunami and its attendant nuclear fallouts.
Battery expert with consulting firm Inspiration Technology, Andrew Rath-mayaki explains to the BBC that production at the Fukushima plant means that dealers would have a hard time obtaining their orders.
Mr. Rath-mayaki added that there is speculation the supply challenges have affected the launch of the latest version of Apple’s tablet in a number of countries.
It is estimated that about five billion mobile phones currently in use are powered by these lithium-ion batteries.
