President John Mahama has questioned the promises being made by his main contender Nana Akufo-Addo in the lead-up to the 2016 general elections saying they lack merit.

He says the promises are political gimmicks only targeted at garnering votes.

Addressing party supporters in Nandom in Upper West Region, Mr Mahama urged his opponent to clearly spell out to the people how realistic his promises are.

"It is easy to promise when you are watching a football match from the stands, you can score as many goals as you want with your mouth. Your mouth can score goals easily but when you are on the football park, it is not as easy to score.

"So you stand outside and say, 'If it were me I would chest the ball, I would put my one leg on it and I would beat this and that player, but you have never been tried and tested," he said.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate jabbed the New Patriotic Party flagbearer's to have an understanding of what a dam is before going to town on a promising spree.

Nana Akufo-Addo has made a number of promises to Ghanaians in his bid to win the race to the Flagstaff House.

Among some of the promises contained in the party's manifesto is the promise to build a dam in every village of the three Northern Regions, a factory in every constituency, a theatre for all 10 regions of Ghana, Free Senior High School (SHS) and the creation of an additional region.

But the President said Nana Akufo-Addo "Can't tell a dug out from a dam, a barrage dam or an irrigation dam?...what does one village one dam mean? You say one village one factory, what does that mean? Is it a gari or bread making factory?" he quizzed.

The President challenged Mr Akufo-Addo to tell Ghanaians the type of factory he intends to put up adding the gari, bread and its related factories have already been put up by his government.

He says it does not make any sense for his opponent to go promising a million dollar per constituency.
