Ghana hockey is setting the pace again with the institution of a scheme to recognize and support past contributors to the game.
A recent Joy Sports focus on the sorry lives of many sports heroes and heroines is encouraging managers of hockey in the country to roll out programmes to honour players and officials of the sport.
A maiden memorial hockey championship was held at the weekend in honour of departed hockey personalities and this will be followed by an awards ceremony on April 2 and the establishment of a fund to support their descendants.
President of Ghana hockey, Oko Nii Koi Dzani said it was absolutely important to recognize the contribution of people in the past to the sport.
That, he said, will encourage others to give of their best knowing that when they leave the scene, they will not be consigned to obscurity.
