A number of staff members of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) implicated in the May 6 oil spillage at the refinery are either to be dismissed or suspended depending on the extent of their involvement in the cause of the incident, says TOR Chief Executive, Dr K. K Sarpong.
Although he would not say how many staff members are affected, Dr Sarpong said by next Tuesday, the names will be made public.
The decision he said is in line with recommendations made by the committee set up to investigate the cause of the oil spillage into the Chemu Lagoon at Tema last month.
Following the incident, two members of TOR’s staff were interdicted but it is not clear if they are among those to be penalized.
The disciplinary action reaffirms the chief executive’s earlier position stated at the time of the incident, that recording a second spillage called for serious action to be taken to prevent more occurrences.
“We don’t want it to happen again and the best way to ensure this is by setting an example,” he said in an interview on May 8, 2007.
