No demo during AU Summit – Police

The Police Service has barred all planned demonstrations during the period of the Africa Union Summit in Accra. Speaking to Joy News, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Douglas Akrofi-Asiedu said no individual or group would be allowed to demonstrate. He confirmed that some civil society groups have written to the police asking for permission to embark on protest over the deaths of Ghanaians in the Gambia, Somalia’s Darfur and the Zimbabwe crisis. Their aim is to pressurize African leaders to take decisive steps on the matter. But DCOP Akrofi-Asiedu said the police have too much on their hands during the Summit and can not assure the demonstrators of their security and the safety of public properties. “We said they should postpone it because where it is selected for the demonstration is not ideal for security…We are overstretched and it would be very difficult for us to get police to protect them,” he told Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh. He said: “We are not in Europe. We are in Ghana and we have our public order act. So that is all that we are following.” DCOP Akrofi-Asiedu advised people planning to demonstrate to adhere to police advise else they would be put behind bars.
