Occasionally you see a player showboating and think there’s simply no way that they are not going to get punished – either by the referee or an antagonised opponent.
However, it’s incredibly rare to see a card come out, even for the most audacious and brazen showboating.
Baroka midfielder Sipho Moeti pushed the boundaries to the absolute limit – well, actually, he trampled all over them – and was promptly punished by the referee to the tune of a yellow card.
The referee was distinctly unimpressed by Moeti kneeling on the ball and doing bizarre standing stepovers which appeared to be a kind of dance around the ball.
With Baroka beating the Platinum Stars 3-0 at the time, the referee clearly felt it was unacceptable taunting.
Moeti, however, pleaded his case after the match and apparently did not see what the problem was.
“I was disappointed with the yellow card. I believe the opponent was far and I was within my right to show off my skill,” Moeti told KickOff.com.
“We were off today (from training). I am going to speak to the club tomorrow and see if they can appeal against the yellow card.
“Those who defend must defend. Those who pass must pass the ball. Those who have skill, let them show it,” said the Soweto-born trickster.
"I grew up in Zondi. This is where I grew up entertaining fans with my skill. I am still going to do more of it as long as my team is winning and in the right places. Football fans come to the stadium for entertainment. Let’s give them goals and skills on the field of play.”
It would be a very brave referee to step in when Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo next get in on the act…
