The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana has denied suggestions that goods and imports from his country are killing businesses and industries in Ghana.
A lot of local firms say the hard times they are experiencing can be traced to the often inferior quality imported from China.
The Managing Director of Aluworks, Kwasi Okoh is one of those who believe there must be restrictions on Chinese imports.
He said, “the Chinese are coming into the country with cheap shoddy goods supported by a huge export rebate from their country.”
He warned if the situation is not checked, local companies which are non-competitive will fold up entirely.
But the Chinese Ambassador Gong Jianzhong told Joy Business the argument is not fair stressing that Ghanaian businesses must stand and face up to the competition.
He said goods from China are doing well because they meet the needs of low income earners in the country.
“China can stop exporting to Ghana but you have to import expensive goods [from other parts of the world],” he said, adding “the Ghanaian people can stop buying cheap China goods.”
Mr Jianzhong said it was not fair for his country to be blamed for the challenges facing local industries.
