There is uneasy calm at the offices of the National Lotteries Authority over reductions in the commission of its operators.
The workers who are aggrieved have besieged the offices of the NLA, disrupting normal work.
A Joy News Editor Samson Lardy Ayeneni who was at the grounds reports of heavy police presence.
The National Chairman of the Lotto Receivers Association, Mr Dan Mensah, said the receivers were being managed by the NLA. “They want to reduce the commission levels our receivers are taking,” he added.
Mr Mensah said at a time when the standard of living is getting higher by the day, it was improper to reduce their commission from 25 per cent to 20 per cent.
“People don’t earn the 25 per cent on a silver platter, they use their money to go and collect goods, go and sell before they get the commission,” he stated.
But officials of the National Lotteries Authority have justified the reduction in commission of its operators.
The Director of operations at the NLA, George Addo-Yobo told Joy News there is good reason for the current reduction.
“For me there is nothing like cheating in this matter, it is a question of rationalizing and understanding the position of each party. Now we are saying that by the nature of the game that we run which we call the six odds, where the player of the game wins multiples of the amount invested in the business is not too good for the government,” he explained.
He said after deduction of taxes and other encumbrances, the actual amount that goes to government is a mere 8.05 per cent – something he thinks is unacceptable.
He is however calling for a dispassionate approach to addressing the matter.
