Manchester United recorded one of their lowest ever percentage showings in their Monday night clash with Liverpool, having just 35% of the ball in a dull 0-0 draw at Anfield.
According to ”‹the Mirror, the Red Devils spent most of the match without the ball during a tense and hotly contested fixture that saw Jose Mourinho more than happy to leave Merseyside with a point, and the statistics prove as much.
United recorded the lowest amount of possession in a single game since Opta statistics began - all the way back in 2003 - and shows just how tight and compact Mourinho wanted his side to be, wary of the attacking threat that Jurgen Klopp's Reds possess.
Despite the dreary looking stats and a game that would have possibly sent some to sleep, Mourinho was pleased with the result, claiming it was 'positive'.
"It is not the result we wanted but it is a positive result," said the Portuguese coach.
"It is a result that stops a direct opponent getting three points at home so not a bad result. The game was difficult for both teams but for longer periods it was more difficult for them than us."
When asked about the lowly possession stat, the former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss insisted that his side had planned for that eventuality.
"That was the game we planned," continued Mourinho. "We knew they would press high and we knew it would be hard for them to score."
Despite it's effectiveness, United fans may be concerned that the club are heading back to the dark days of former boss Louis Van Gaal's era, where their lack of invention and attacking flair on the ball left them playing an extremely defensive game, and will be looking for an improvement in their next Premier League outing.
