Dr James Appiah Amoateng, Head of the Dental Department of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), has advised parents to teach their children good oral health practices to avoid oral health problems.
This followed the high cases of periodontal and dental caries diagnosed among school children screened at Jacobu in the Amansie Central district.
The about 500 children examined by dentists from KATH were all found with various oral health diseases.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, he suggested that oral health is included in the school curriculum to teach children the proper ways of brushing the teeth and also to educate them on the benefits of good oral hygiene.
He also advised parents to stop giving too much of sweets to children and advised that children are taken to the dentist, every six months.
Dr Amoateng said it should not be lost on anyone that good oral health improves general health.
To effectively promote dental care, KATH has set up separate departments for child, community and a "Maxillo facial surgery.
Additionally, an ultra- modern Dental School had been established at hospital by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to train more dental surgeons
Ghana currently has about 200 dentists.
Dr Amoateng asked the public to go for regular dental check-ups.
