A member of the Tain District Assembly in the Brong Ahafo Region has sued the Member of Parliament for the Tain Constituency, Joe Danquah for defamation of character.
Kofi Dwomo, who represents Tanokrom Electoral Area claimed in the suit field at the Sunyani High Court that the MP caused to be published in a private daily that he Dwomo had stolen and sold 50 bags of cement belonging to the Tanokrom electoral area.
The suit did not specify damages but said that Mr Danquah had accused him of selling the cement which were meant for the construction of concrete poles.
Also joined to the suit are Western Publications; publishers of Daily Guide newspaper and Eric Bawa, the Brong Ahafo Regional Correspondent of the newspaper.
In his statement of claim, Mr Dwomo said he has been a retired Assistant Commissioner of Tax in the Internal Revenue Service and the Assembly man for Tanokrom for 15 years.
The statement said the MP made defamation statement at Nsawkaw in the Tain District against him and the Daily Guide published it correspondent’s report on the press conference without cross checking the facts from him (plaintiff).
The publication, the plaintiff said was in total disregard of his rights and portrayed him as a dishonest person who sold cement belonging to his electoral area.
The statement said that “the publication has severely damaged my character and reputation and has subjected me to public ridicule and contempt and as public figure, it has lowered my reputation in the eyes of right thinking members of the society.
Plaintiff therefore prayed for an order of the court to compel the defendants to retract the story and offer an apology.
