The Legon Centre for International Affairs, LECIA, in conjunction with the Frederick Ebert Foundation is organizing a one day brainstorming session on the forthcoming African Union Summit.
It is being attended by the academia and civil society groups with interests in governance.
The Director of LECIA, Professor Kofi Kumado told Joy News the Centre hopes to collate the views of participants in order to advise the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“They should provide the ministry some ideas that would inform what position Ghana as a nation should take at the forthcoming Summit,” he said.
Prof. Kumado said inspite of the challenges facing the continent, it should not fear the possibility of a United States of Africa.
“The fact that the item remains on the agenda inspite of the challenges suggests that people who are said to be opposed are not really opposing it,” he said.
A retired diplomat, Ambassador Joseph Cleland said African leaders are ready to push the idea of a Union Government. According to him, the structures put together under the Union government should be empowered to push the agenda forward.
“We have to work gradually towards it. We have to proceed step by step and ultimately we shall be there. We are already on the ground,” he said.
