Wayne Rooney's testimonial was a tribute to the latter part of his career, lots of slow possession punctuated by heavy touches and fleeting moments of class.
Rooney, though, was one of the better players in the 54 minutes that he was on the pitch, prompting around the fringes of the box with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's hold-up play showcasing the dexterity of his touch.
But though it was United pressing the action, it was Everton who created the best chances of the game, both in the a drab first half. Gerard Deulofeu had a shot well saved by David de Gea, and then Romelu Lukaku headed wide from Seamus Coleman's cross.
If anything, the second half was even worse than the first, rafts of changes affecting the flow and meaning the withdrawal of most of the players most likely to do something. As such, no-one did anything.
United and Everton did, though, look relatively organised in defence. Eric Bailly and Daley Blind acquitted themselves relatively well at the centre of United's defence, while Everton looked secure in their 3-5-2 formation.
Also on the plus side, both sides should be better for the workout; they'd better be.
