The Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Abdul-Rahman Gumah, has urged zonal council and unit committee members to be proactive in revenue mobilization programmes for the Assembly to carry out the needed development goals to raise the standards of living of the people.
“Without adequate funds no development could take place. Let us all put in all our efforts to mobilize more revenue for the benefit of our community,” he stressed.
Mr. Gumah said this at the inauguration of a 30-members body of the Bawku urban council at Bawku.
He said for any meaningful development to take place, it demanded the active involvement and the commitments of the people to support it through financial resources.
He said the concept of the decentralization process was to initiate decision-making process at the grass root level for the people to implement their own collective projects and programmes.
Mr. Gumah said this would afford the councils the opportunity to address their peculiar needs without waiting upon the central government.
He disclosed that the Community-Based Rural Development Project (CBRDP) was supporting four less endowed zonal councils with ¢150 million each to implement their projects and plans.
The Assembly and the zonal councils are expected to make a counterpart contribution of ¢7.5 million each. The zonal councils are Zawse-Bansi, Kulungugu, Mognori and Widana.
The MCE entreated the councilors not to relent in their efforts in supervising and monitoring development projects.
He commended IBIS Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organization for its cooperation and support for making the zonal councils to be operational and affirmed the Assembly’s preparedness to assist the councilors in the performance of their duties.
Mr. Abubakari Iddrisu, the newly elected Chairman of the Council, thanked his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him and called for their support to make their tenure of office a fruitful one.
