Karaga HIV/AIDS patients ignore support

Information gathered in the Karaga District of the northern region has it that persons living with HIV/AIDS are refusing to show up for support made available by the Ghana Aids Commission to improve their wellbeing. The Karaga District Assembly secured enough funding from the Ghana Aids Commission to register all HIV/AIDS patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme and provide them nutritional support, but the patients have ignored for fear of stigmatization. The District Chief Executive, Hon. Sulemana Hussein Issah, dropped this hint on the occasion of the 2010 World Aids Day which was celebrated under the theme, “Universal access and human right: action now”. He praised residents of the district for ensuring maximum self-discipline which he noted had contributed to the lowest percentage of HIV/AIDS prevalence in the district. Hon. Sulemana Hussein promised not to renege on his administration’s duty to allocate 0.5% of the District Assembly Common Fund to combat the HIV/AIDS menace. He called on all to join hands with the District Aids Committee to re-double attempts that have been made to totally eradicate the disease. The District’s Focal Person on HIV/AIDS, Mr. Akurugu Charles Ayuune, pleaded with the chiefs and people of Karaga to help the District Aids Committee to comprehensively deal with the deadly disease. For her part, Madam Victoria Aboyella, the Karaga District Public Health Nurse sensitized the participants on the causes and preventive measures of the HIV/AIDS disease. The event was marked with a float with residents displaying placards, some read “Take care AIDS is real” while others read “Let’s come together and fight against HIV/AIDS” as well as “Aids can kill, be faithful to your partner”.
