Rwanda’s Amavubi returned to winning ways after earning a shock 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in the on-going Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Dar es Salaam.
The Elephants, who are one of three guest teams in the competition, broke the deadlock on 19 minutes when striker Konadio N’dri Fabrice took advantage of a defensive slip up to beat Amavubi goalkeeper Jean Luc Ndayishimiye, but Amavubi however restored parity on the stroke of half-time when SC Kiyovu striker Dady Birori soared to head in a Haruna Niyonzima corner.
Peter Kagabo then came off the bench to seal a shock win with a 77th minute header that beat Ivorian goalie Sangare Dadra.
Despite the win, Amavubi head coach Sellas Tetteh is cautious about his team’s chances in the two-week tournament.
“There are still two matches in the preliminaries to think further ahead,” Tetteh told New Times.
“We won because we had the ability to turn a defeat into a win,” he added.
His Ivorian counterpart Koudio Georges blamed his team’s defeat on inexperience.
“It is a young side that still has a lot to learn, one of them being taking chances,” he said.
On Saturday, Tanzania Mainland team ‘Kilimanjaro Stars’ lost 1-0 to Zambia after dominating possession for the better part of the match.
It all looked good for Stars in the first ten minutes, but the home team wasted two clear chances that could have lifted their morale to win the game.
They were made to pay in the 17th minute, when Kennedy Mudenda scored the lone goal, with a simple tap in following horrendous defensive blunders.
Fans were frustrated and some booed the players and their Danish coach Jan Poulsen, who in the end said he was not happy with fans reactions.
“No player wants to play bad football and good fans do support their team in whatever circumstances,” the Dane was quoted as saying in the Daily News.
In other matches, Burundi beat Somalia 2-0 on Saturday while Zanzibar handed Sudan the same margin yesterday in a Group B match.
