Minister of Information, John Tia Akologo has expressed concern about what he described as misinterpretation of the 2011 Budget Statement presented to Parliament.
He cited the example of attempts to create the impression that government wants to levy churches, even though the budget statement did not say so.
The Minister was speaking at a workshop for staff of the Information Services Department and some journalists on the Budget Statement.
The Information staff will begin a nationwide public education on the budget. The Minister told them they hold the key to the successful implementation of the budget.
“We who are charged with disseminating this information to the people have to show commitment; we have to show professionalism.
“If you are to inform, you do so in a certain manner. You do so with some objective. The objective is that your information should be understood. It should be accepted,” he said.
“...If at the end of the day, your feedback is that the people do not even understand your message they will not implement them,” he added.
He also cautioned them against politicising the budget statement but to present the facts to the public.
