The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is raising red flags over what it says are attempts by Members of Parliament to erase key clauses within the Petroleum Revenue Management Bill 2010 currently before the House.
General Secretary of the union, Mr. Kofi Asamoah contends that the act will be detrimental to the interest of the country.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the General Secretary said the TUC has credible information that the Public Interest and Accountability Committee which is part of the bill is about to be expunged.
He explained to Joy News’ Fiifi Koomson after the news conference that the Accountability Committee will engender transparency within the oil revenue management of the country.
Mr. Asamoah wondered why some MPs will be lobbying to have that committee erased from the bill.
“We see it as a very worrying and unfortunate development,” he said.
When asked to provide the basis for their suspicions, he said he was aware that the Parliamentary Sub Committee on Energy has made a request to that effect.
According to him both sides of the Parliamentary divide have resolved to take the Accountability Committee out of the bill with the explanation that it will duplicate the work of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament.
He debunked that assertion, saying the Committee will rather supplement activities of the PAC and will engender transparency in the oil operations.
Mr Asamoah appealed to the MPs to reconsider their decision in the best interest of the country.
