The Board Chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko says he would have fired Coach Ebo Mends if he had not resigned.
Ebo Mends quit his job Monday, barely a day after his side lost 1:0 on home-ground to bitter rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak in their Dr. Sarpong who week 9 Glo Premier League game.
Dr. Sarpong who was speaking on Asempa FM Tuesday morning said the club and the coach came to a mutual understanding to cancel their relationship after a thorough analysis of all the nine games played so far, insisting that the decision was purely based on the technical capabilities of the coach.
Dr. Sarpong indicated that even though the defeat to Hearts of Oak was a determining factor in the Board’s decision to accept Ebo Mends' resignation, the coach’s performance was assessed based on all the games he had taken charge of.
The board chairman pointed out that it was the right decision for both the club and the coach as the performance of the team was beginning to take a nosedive.
He said this decision was taken to allow the club to chart a new course in its quest to build a strong technical team to manage its affairs.
Asked whether the playing body is also responsible for the poor performance lately, Dr. Sarpong said they had not undertaken any analysis to ascertain that fact but believes the playing body is the material at their disposal and every technical team worth its salt will make do with it.
Dr. Sarpong assured supporters that a new coach will be appointed soon to change the fortunes of the club, explaining that the board had appointed another former player of the club, Opoku Nti to take temporary charge of the team.
