Osabarima Kofi Boateng III, Chief of Akwatia in the Eastern region, has hailed the directive by Mr Stephen Asamoah-Boateng, Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to deploy sanitary inspectors to ensure the environment was kept clean to promote good health.
He said the directive was appropriate to reduce the insanitary conditions that had engulfed the nation.
Addressing a meeting of elders and the people at Akwatia, Osabarima Boateng noted that sanitary inspectors, popularly known as "Sama Sama" or "Tankaase" needed the support of all patriotic Ghanaians to succeed.
He said with the re-introduction of sanitary inspectors, the crusade to rid the nation of filth would have a new momentum and entered a new phase that would ensure a clean environment and improvement in the quality of life.
Osabarima Boateng urged the assemblies to offer the sanitary inspectors their maximum support to work effectively.
He advised the sanitary inspectors to avoid the temptation of compromising their positions for financial gain.
Nana Akwatiahene observed that, in the past when sanitary inspectors were functioning efficiently and effectively, environmental sanitation was taken seriously and towns and villages were always kept clean for fear of being prosecuted.
"But when they left the scene, most people did not care, resulting in indiscriminate dumping of refuse and liquid waste into drains to destroy the environment and endanger people's lives, " he added.
