Jose Felix Dos Santos Mourinho, the self- proclaimed and now rightfully acclaimed “special one”, had a hand in both the beginning and end of Multi-TV’s expansive coverage of Europe’s elite leagues.
In the pick of Tuesday’s Champions League action, the flamboyant Portuguese would pit his somewhat hurriedly assembled Madrid side against a Milan side in desperate search of redemption, given their struggles on all fronts in recent years.
And on Sunday in the Serie A, Mourinho’s former team, Inter Milan, welcomed Sampdoria to the San Siro where the three points on offer were badly needed following victory for table leading Lazio over Cagliari earlier.
Inter stuttered to a 1-1 draw at the San Siro, increasing the pressure on manager, Rafa Benitez. The Nerazzurri had picked up a solitary point from their last three games, following a defeat to potential title challengers, Roma and a draw against Juventus, thus raising questions about Inter’s ability to compete for the Scudetto this season. Sampdoria winger Stefano Guberti, volleyed home Cristian Chivu’s 62nd minute cross to give the Bluecerchiati a deserved lead.
The Italian Champions cranked up the pressure on their opponents resulting in Eto’s 80th minute equalizer, his 13th goal in his last ten outings for the club. Benitez’s men eventually had to settle for a draw - their 3rd of the season.
LIVE Friday Night Bundesliga action on Joy Sports and Adom TV, involved a clash between Hamburg and defending league Champions Bayern Munich.
The Bavaraians, who have endured a torrid start to the season, escaped from the Imtech Arena with a point after seeing Jonathan Pitroipa’s 80th minute effort canon off the upright following an excellent break away, and finished by the Burkina Faso winger. Bayern’s draw, their third of the season, leaves them languishing in 11th, 12 points behind surprise league leaders, Mainz 05.
Defending Europa League Champions Atletico Madrid took on Anthony Annan’s Rosenburg in Thursday nights’ Europa League action. The Black Stars’ midfield anchors performance, though typically efficient, was rendered pointless given the 3-0 drubbing dished out to the Norwegian champions by their overwhelmingly superior Spanish opponents.
The result, the first for the European Super-Cup winners in Group B-moved them off the bottom of the table and into third, a point behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen and level with second place Aris Saloniki of Greece. Rosenburg lie at the bottom of Group B, following the defeat. The two sides will meet for the return leg in Norway in two weeks.
The match of the week in Europe was undoubtedly the Champions League clash between illustrious giants Real Madrid and AC Milan - winners of a combined total of 16 European titles. The night turned out to be a special one for Jose Mourinho’s outfit following a commanding display over a disjointed Milan side. Two goals in the space of two minutes killed the game off as a contest. The jaded Milan outfit chased shadows all night and were lucky to flee the Bernabeu with only two goals conceded.
This emphatic result signaled Mourinho’s intent to defend his Champions League crown, winning the elusive 10th Champions League crown for his employers in the process. For Milan lessons will have to be learnt quickly if they are to avoid the ignominy of suffering a double defeat to Mr. Mourinho when the sides meet at the San Siro on 3rd November, 2010. Defeat for the Rossoneri then, would put qualification for the knock out stages in doubt, especially since Ajax lie 3rd in the Group G table behind Milan on goal difference alone.
LIVE action on Joy Sports and Adom-TV on Multi-TV continues in the Bundesliga and Serie A this Saturday. First up, FC Schalke takes on Bayern Leverkusen at 4:30pm. A titanic clash between AC Milan and Juventus then follows at 7:45pm. Champions League and Europa League action resumes on 2nd November, 2010.
