Government and advertisers have agreed to establish a standards authority to regulate advertising.
The agreement follows concerns by government about the increasing use of minors in television and radio commercials and their vulnerability to abuse.
After meeting with leaders of the Advertising Association of Ghana over the matter, Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, told Joy News both parties have agreed to commence work on a draft framework.
He said both parties bemoaned the lack of advertising standards in the country and resolved to put in place a regulatory framework to “help regulate, sanitise and enforce such change and ensure that all advertisements meet high standards.”
The AAG welcomed government’s decision to support the drafting of the legislation.
Mr. Francis Dadzie, the Executive Director of the AAG, told Joy News the association already has a framework and will tweak it to encompass the concerns of the government.
