Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has received the 2006 BBC African Footballer of the Year award at an impressive ceremony in Accra.
The award is for a player whose performance has been outstanding during the year under review.
The Black Stars midfielder beat his Chelsea teammate and Ivorian captain, Didier Drogba in a poll organized in January by the BBC on its African sports magazine programme, Fast Track.
Michael Essien who was presented the award by Ghanaian football legend Abedi Ayew said he was honored by the feat.
