Junior nurses and midwives who began a nationwide demonstration Monday over unpaid salary arrears have called off the action.
The health workers claimed they had not been paid for about 20 months and several petitions to the health ministry had gone unheeded.
But speaking to Joy News Wednesday, their spokesperson, Enoch Agyepong said the Ghana Health Service had assured that all monies due them will be paid at the end of the month.
The junior nurses and midwives are however demanding an apology from the Deputy Health Minister, Rojo Mettle Nunoo.
They claim Mr Mettle Nunoo had made derogatory remarks about them and must retract those comments. The junior nurses claim the deputy minister's assertion that they had no certificates and were not yet qualified nurses was regrettable.
Enoch Agyepong said Mr Mettle Nunoo’s comments cast a slur on the integrity of the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health which engaged their services.
“We have been working for the past two years, [what the minister said] means that the ministry employed unqualified professionals to be killing people for the past two years,” Mr Agyepong said.
Mr Mettle Nunoo admits he may have made some "regrettable comments".
He however maintains that “all those words put together does not equal one maternal death. All those words I used does not justify one child dying because they refuse to send services to Komfo-Anokye [hospital.]”
