Vaah Junior Foundation for Better Maternal and Child Health is receiving nominations, spanning September to December for Vaah Junior Award for excellence on Maternal and Neonatal care.
The award was instituted by the foundation in memory of baby Nyile Vaah Junior who died on March 9, in a private hospital in Accra due to the alleged negligence and incompetence displayed by health professionals during his mother's labour and delivery.
A statement issued by the foundation and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday said the distraught couple, with the support of friends formed the foundation to among other things serve as a platform for those who would be suffering in silence for similar tragedies to be able to share their experiences.
"Since its formation in March this year, the foundation has received tremendous support and endorsement from many Ghanaians. Its website has seen many Ghanaians sharing their heartbreaking experiences at health facilities in the country," the statement said.
The award is one of the key activities the foundation hopes to undertake as a way to showcase excellent and selfless service to women before, during and after delivery.
Mrs Elizabeth Alluah Vaah, Executive Director of the foundation and mother of Nyile explained that as Ghanaians develop the attitude of exposing substandard care by health professionals, it is equally important that "we honour and appreciate excellent and selfless service".
She said the nominations for the award should include a short background of what occurred to the sender, and a description of what the health provider did that they considered as excellent.
"Nominees may be traditional birth attendants, nurses, midwives or doctors," she said.
Nominations should be in written form and must include the contact information of the person and posted to P.O. Box CT, 3132, Cantonments, Accra or by email to info@vaahjuniorfoundation.org.
