GPL REVIEW: 7 things learned from matchday 12

MATCHDAY 12 SAW SOME MOVEMENT IN THE LEAGUE AND LATIF BLESSING GOING JOINT TOP IN THE GOAL SCORERS CHART. What did we learn?

TEAM OF THE MATCHDAY: ASANTE KOTOKO

PLAYER OF THE MATCHDAY: LAWSON BEKUI

DISAPPOINTING TEAM OF THE MATCHDAY: NEW EDUBIASE, BECHEM UNITED

OSEI HAS EARNED HIMSELF AN EXTENDED STAY AT KOTOKO

Asante Kotoko’s resurgence continued under Michael Osei with yet another 1-0 away victory against Bechem United. This was the third successive win away from home leaving Osei one short of the overall away record by his predecessor David Duncan. Duncan won 4 out of 13 away games for the Porcupines during his tenure at the club. Kotoko will treat this victory with much premium because they were without arguably their best player Dauda Mohammed. The youngster had been their major source of goals in recent matches and the build up to the game was dominated by talks of former coach Didi Dramani sabotaging the team by keeping Dauda in the Satellites team camp. However, Michael Osei found the right system for his team to once again pick three important points on the road.

BUT THE TRUE IN FORM IS ADUANA STARS

Aduana Stars stats read 0 goals scored, 0 points after three games raising eyebrows about their major spending spree. After 5 consecutive wins, the Dormaa side look more than capable of clinching only their second league title in 7 years. Their latest win being a 1-0 win over New Edubiase in Obuasi. This impressive form has seen them score 4 goals in 3 consecutive home matches. The central figures in this turnaround have been Romanian coach Aristica Cioaba, Yahaya Mohammed, Bright Adjei and Godfred Saka. The Dormaa side began this fine run of form with a comprehensive 4-0 trouncing of Sekondi Hasaacas.

HEARTS FINALLY WIN AT HOME

The Phobians have been lauded for their fine form away from home winning at tough grounds such as Obuasi, Tarkwa and Berekum. However the Phobians had not won in Accra since 13th March despite recording huge attendances at the stadium. Isaac Mensah finally put to an end this poor sequence at home which had seen them lose 2 and draw 1 by netting the winner against Hasaacas. It was not the most impressive of performances as Kenichi Yatsuhashi himself admitted but scraping such victories are the what a club needs if they are to mount a serious title charge.

ALL SET UP FOR A GRAND MEETING IN DORMAA

Aduana’s fine form coupled with Hearts rise to the top of the league all but makes Sunday’s clash between both sides a must watch. With two points separating both sides and head to head the main determinant in the league, this game could easily pass for a title decider. Aristica Cioaba has set up an open attacking side while Kenichi Yatsuhashi has set up a team based on solid defensive foundations. The Phobians are unbeaten away while Aduana score for fun at home. All roads lead to Dormaa on Sunday.

INTERNATIONAL CALL UPS HAMPER WA ALL STARS DEVELOPMENT

Wa All Stars were the team to beat for a long time in the league but their form in their last three games has been nothing short of calamitous. One point out of a possible nine has seen Amos Adepa’s side slip to third on the league log. A major contributing factor to this has been their contribution to the Black Stars and Satellites team. As many as four players; Richard Ofori, Hafiz Adams, Abdul Ganiyu and Richard Arthur were all away with the Black Stars in Japan while the league was ongoing. 4 key players who will start on any given day. Any team thrives on consistency and continuity to excel and that is lacking in Wa All Stars now. They need to get their their full components together and ensure they do not further fall off the pace.

NO DELIGHT FOR TWO NEW COACHES

This matchday saw Jimmy Cobblah and Prosper Nartey begin their campaigns as managers of Inter Allies and Dwarfs respectively. Both managers were expecting victories in their opening games at home but the script were different as both were held to draws. Fredrick Boateng scored the first goal in the Jimmy Cobblah era but they were pegged back by Dauda Mohammed of Ashantigold. Dwarfs also drew goalless with Chelsea in Cape Coast. The result leaves both clubs in the bottom three  and Jimmy Cobblah and Prosper Nartey will have a lot of work on their hand to ensure survival.

LAWSON BEKUI IS QUIETLY MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF

All the talk this season has been about Yahaya Mohammed, Saddick Adams and Latif Blessing but one striker who has gone about his business is Lawson Bekui. The trained teacher who joined Dreams from Ho Steel is a trained teacher whose main attributes are his pace and strength. His consistency earned him a place in the Local Black Stars and has shown no sign of retrogression. His brace for Dreams pushed him to 5 goals all season. An impressive tally for a striker with no Premier League experience. His 5 goals means he has currently scored 45.45% of Dreams goals (11) this season making him an integral member of Akonnour’s team. He will surely continue to play a major role as the season heads to the business stretch.
