Ghana Boxing has been hit with yet another big loss as the fraternity woke up to the sudden demise of Coach Emmanuel Tagoe .ak.a. Akese earlier today.
Coach Akese, who was the Head trainer of the Black Panthers Gym and an active member of the United Boxing Coaches Association, died in his sleep according to WBO International Referee, Roger Barnor, a nephew of the deceased. His death comes only months after the sudden passing of legendary trainer Alloway, (Godwin Nii Dzanie Kotey) who was President of the United Boxing Coaches Association of Ghana.
Confirming the unfortunate news to Joy Sports, his nephew said the deceased trainer turned up at training yesterday in his usual bubbly self and went about his duties with his boxers as the Black Panthers Gym, situated off the High Street in Accra
"This morning we got a call from his wife saying he died in his sleep. We are still in shock, Referee Barnor added in a sorrowful tone.
Coach Emmanuel Tagoe was the Uncle and trainer of WBO Africa super featherweight champion, Emmanuel 'Game Boy' Tagoe whom he guided to many successful wins. He also manned the Game Boy's corner to big wins including the IBF intercontinental super featherweight and WBA International Lightweight titles.
Coach Akese also worked with some big name boxers including, ex IBF welterweight champion, Joshua Clottey, former double commonwealth middleweight champion, former WBO Africa light heavyweight champion, Bukom Banku (Brimah Kamoko), Ayittey P
owers, Osumanu Yahaya a.k.a (Ossie Duran) and former national lightweight champion Stephen 'Ataa Dzata' Okine.
He was survived by a wife and five children. Meanwhile, tributes have started pouring in for the late trainer
Black Stars Captain and boxing promoter, Asamoah Gyan tweeted "hmmm Akese RIP. This is bad".
A delegation from the Ghana Boxing Authority will soon visit his home to mourn with his family.
