Samuel Eto'o struck a brilliant hat-trick as holders Inter Milan thrashed Werder Bremen at the San Siro, while Barcelona had to settle for a point against Rubin Kazan.
Below is a round up the action on another action-packed evening of Champions League football around Europe Wednesday.
Group 'A'
Reigning champions Inter Milan were at their devastating best as they took control of their group with a home demolition of German side Werder Bremen.
Eto'o opened the scoring from Esteban Cambiasso's pass and doubled the lead after a long ball from Lucio, with the Cameroon striker teeing up Wesley Sneijder to make it 3-0.
Inter, who lost Lucio to injury, completed the rout when Eto'o sealed his treble, rounding Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese to slot in with nine minutes remaining.
In the other game in the group, Tottenham joined Inter on four points with an impressive 4-1 win over Dutch champions FC Twente at White Hart Lane.
Rafael van der Vaart missed a penalty, scored and was sent off as Roman Pavlyuchenko scored two penalties and Gareth Bale rounded it off, Twente's Nacer Chadli grabbing their consolation.
Group 'B'
French side Lyon made it two wins out of two to take control of the group with a comfortable 3-1 win away at Hapoel Tel-Aviv.
Michel Bastos scored from the spot early on and he doubled the lead with a deflected drive. Hapoel set up a nervy finale when keeper Vincent Enyeama wrong-footed opposite number Hugo Lloris from the spot, but Miralem Pjanic pounced to seal the points for Lyon.
Schalke got their campaign up and running with a 2-0 home victory over Portuguese giants Benfica, a win that sends the Germans up to second in the group.
Jefferson Farfan fired home the opener with only 17 minutes remaining at the Veltins Arena, before Klaas-Jan Huntelaar collected a Jermaine Jones pass to wrap it up.
Group 'C'
Manchester United kick-started their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at La Liga leaders Valencia in Spain.
They had to wait until five minutes from time for the breakthrough, Mexican striker Javier Hernandez stepping off the bench to smash home a late winner.
Scottish champions Rangers recorded their first Champions League victory in 14 attempts as they saw off Turkish side Bursaspor at Ibrox.
The all-important goal came in the 17th minute when Steven Naismith flicked home from inside the box after Kirk Broadfoot headed on Steven Whittaker's pass.
Group 'D'
Barcelona had to come from behind to earn a point in their second Group D match at Russian side Rubin Kazan.
The hosts went in front on the half-hour mark when Cristian Noboa slotted in from the spot, only for Barca - for whom Lionel Messi returned from injury - to level with a penalty of their own courtesy of David Villa.
Danish side FC Copenhagan took advantage to storm to the top of the group after a second surprise victory, this time 2-0 at Greeks Panathinaikos in Athens.
Dame N'Doye - against his former club - and Martin Vingaard struck in the first half, with the home team having ex-Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva sent off after the break.
