Owners of vehicles which use Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will soon pay more for the commodity.
The Ghana Road Fund says every liter of LPG will attract a special levy of six pesewas as already pertains to diesel and petrol users.
According to officials, this will ensure equity in tax distribution and increased revenue for road maintenance.
Additionally, more toll booths are to be erected on major highways to enhance revenue collection.
Director of the Ghana Road Fund, Francis Digber, announced this to journalists in Kumasi, as part of educational drive to update the public on the activities of the fund.
Currently, the Road Fund generates financial resources from fuel levy, road and bridge tolls, road worthiness fees as well as international transit fees.
Officials however say the resources are inadequate to maintain the country’s highways. As part of measures to increase funding, new toll booths will be constructed where existing ones in high traffic points will be automated.
Mr. Digber admits the introduction of the levies will drain the pockets of Ghanaians, but he maintains it will ensure regular and proper shaping of the roads to the satisfaction of the tax-payer.
There have been concerns about leakages in the management of road funds especially at the toll booths.
But Mr. Digber says several measures have been put in place to plug the loop-holes.
This according to him included automation of toll booths at some high traffic areas to decrease the human elements in the collection of levies.
“This issue of leakages is something that has really agitated the Road Fund for quite a while, and the board members are very keen to root it out,’’ he said.
Some booths have been provided with security officers to take surveillance on collectors to ensure money collected do not land in individual pockets.
Targets have also been given out to toll booth stations to ensure funds are not diverted.
