Finance and Economic Planning Minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor has assured that the cocoa sector will not be neglected because of the oil find.
Currently the second highest foreign exchange earner, the commodity enjoys massive support from government; a factor many say has fueled its growth.
There are however fears the sector’s good days are numbered with the advent of the relatively more prized oil and gas sector. But the Finance Minister has assured that will not happen.
Dr. Duffuor told Joy Business the government will by next week announce a new cocoa producer price to signal that it still values the cocoa sector.
The last producer price announced for the crop in January was 150 Ghana cedis for a 64 kilo bag.
COCOBOD Chief Executive, Anthony Fofie, will not say what the new price will be but remains confident it will further help discourage farmers from smuggling their produce to neighbouring countries.
