Greater Accra Regional branch of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has directed that its members should display the new Ghana Cedi conversion charts in their vehicles.
This is to assist in educating passengers in particular and general public in general on the re-domination exercise, expected to commence in July this year.
Alhaji E. A. Tetteh, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the GPRTU, in an interview with the GNA on Friday in Accra, said the directive given at the Union's Executive meeting, also requested drivers to display equivalent lorry fares to avoid confrontation between them and passengers.
On the current spate of lorry accidents in the country, Alhaji Tetteh disagreed with the notion that it was mainly due to movement of heavy-duty trucks on the roads and illiteracy on the part of drivers but said indiscipline was a major cause of accidents.
He said any policy aimed at preventing people without formal education from acquiring driving licenses would amount to the denial of their right work to make a decent living, adding that there was evidence of educated people involving themselves in accidents.
Alhaji Tetteh said road signs as a visual aid had never been difficult for illiterate divers to comprehend.
He appealed to stakeholders in the transportation industry to ensure that drivers obeyed traffic regulations to avoid the carnage on our roads as results of lorry accidents.
