Former Ghana keeper Abubakar Damba has jumped to the defence of Hearts keeper Soulama Abdoulaye after his howler gifted Kotoko a 1-0 victory over Hearts of Oak.
The keeper had a torrid day after he was red carded in the second half after denying Dauda Mohammed a clear goal scoring opportunity.
The Burkinabe was playing against his former employers for the first time in a league game in Accra and for Damba, Soulama was keen to prove himself to his former employers.
“In football, everything can happen, the fans were great and the stadium was charged but Soulama should have kept it cool but he wanted to prove himself to his former employers that they were wrong to let him go,” he told Asempa Sports.
“He should have understood that he is playing against his former club and he should have again recognized that the pressure will be unimaginable but he was anxious to perform against his former side and that was what cost the team and him as a player.”
“I know and I believe he has played in big stadiums and he is the goalkeeper for his national team and he seen big crowds than what we saw at the Accra Sports Stadium.”
“The problem was, there was a big miscommunication between Soulama and his defender but in all, let’s treat him very well and motivate him or else he will lose his confidence as a player because he has a lot of football in him.”
Abubakar Damba was once goalkeeping coach of Accra Hearts of Oak.
