A spokesperson for the Ghana Football Association says the FA is not administered with monies from the government and cannot therefore be held accountable for monies it does not expend.
Randy Abbey’s comments come on the back of increasing corruption perception in the FA.
Critics of the FA have called for the thorough audit of the Ghana Football Association culminating in a Serious Fraud Office instituting an investigation into the accounts of the FA.
But a writ has been filed on behalf of Mr. George Afriyie, an Executive Member of the FA, restraining the SFO from investigating the soccer body.
This turn of events seem to have heightened the corruption perceptions in the administration of football in the country.
Reacting to the issue on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Randy Abbey told sit-in host Bernard Saibu the FA is a private entity which has its own rules and regulations.
He insisted that the FA does not run on government subvention, saying that most of the corruption allegations against the FA are fuelled by ignorance.
He explained that the monies the government make available during international competitions like the Nations Cup and World Cup as well as those of other youth and women’s tournaments are monies that are provided to the Sports Ministry which then pays it directly to the players and other service providers.
If it is tickets for the players, it is the Ministry which appoints its own travel and tour agents. If it is bonuses for the players and the team as a whole it is the ministry which pays it directly to the individual beneficiaries, he added.
He said the FA only presents budgets to the government on international assignments for the national teams and to justify it, if need be, but does not in anyway handle the physical cash.
Randy Abbey stated that it is completely misplaced therefore for anybody to ask the FA to account for monies it does not expend.
He stressed that the FA has both internal and external audit institutions which scrutinizes all funds accrued internally and from other affiliate bodies.
