Kwaku Manu, a 38-year-old farmer at Kronko village in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, is currently in prison custody for allegedly unleashing his libido on a 16-year-old mentally retarded girl, pending further investigations into the allegation.
Having realized the victim was suffering from imbecility, the accused person was said to have secretly had bouts of sex with the teenage girl (name withheld) without her consent, in the absence of her parents.
Manu, whose plea was not taken to the charge of rape, contrary to section 97 of Act 29/60, was remanded into prison custody by a circuit court in Obuasi and would re-appear on September 14, 2010.
Policy prosecutor, Inspector Albert Anane informed the court presided over by Gilbert Ayisi Addo that the complainant, Philip Addai, who is the biological father of the victim, is a farmer like the accused person.
According to him, the complainant lives with his 16-year-old daughter at Akronko, a farming community in Obuasi, where the accused person, Kwaku Manu is also a resident.
On August 19, 2010 around 10 am, while the complainant was at home, he heard his daughter, who is suffering from imbecility, warning the accused to desist from abusing her sexually.
Armed with this information, the complainant confronted the accused person, who conceded having had a series of sexual intercourse with the victim right in her father's house without her consent, prosecution stated further.
A report was made to the police, who issued a medical form to the complainant to take his daughter to hospital for treatment, whilst the accused was arrested.
Inspector Anane indicated that the accused admitted in his caution statement that he had sexual intercourse with the victim on several occasions on mutual grounds.
After police investigation, the accused was charged with the offence and arraigned.
