A group calling itself “Alliance for the Survival of Obuasi” is seeking the intervention of the Ministry of Lands and Forestry in the impasse between mining giant, AngloGold Ashanti and its longtime service provider, Mining and Building Contractors.
The group is threatening industrial chaos in the town if AngloGold went ahead to abrogate the nearly 90-year-old contract with MBC for pre-production work in the mines.
It says the economy of Obuasi will grind to a halt if the 1,300 employees of MBC are made to go home.
Although officials of AngloGold earlier played down the concerns of the group the “Alliance for the Survival of Obuasi” says latest developments suggest the mining giant is bent on abrogating the MBC contract.
Edward Kwasi Akuoku, leader for the group in an interview with Joy Business, explained some of what he insinuates are tactics to get rid of the workers of MBC
“The workers are complaining they have not been paid their salary advances.”
“…Unfortunately those in AGA have received their salary advances those in MBC have not,” he alleges.
He also cites bad working conditions the workers of MBC have been exposed to in the mines, conditions he hinted could risk the lives of the workers.
The group has also petitioned Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu the second and other authorities.
