Government has confirmed a decision by Kosmos Energy to terminate its sales agreement with Exxonmobil over the former’s stake in the Jubilee field.
A letter addressed to the Energy Minister, Dr Oteng Adjei from Kosmos and signed by its Chief Operations Officer, stated that the sales and purchase agreement signed between Kosmos Ghana and Exxonmobil in June, 2010 has been terminated.
No reasons were assigned for the termination.
The new development may come as a surprise to industry watchers given the near animosity between Kosmos and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation over the sale of the 23 per cent stake to Exxonmobil.
GNPC had vowed to resist Kosmos’ sale of the stake to Exxonmobil, saying it has the first right of purchase if Kosmos is no longer interested in the oil field.
Deputy Energy Minister, Inusah Fuseini told Joy News’ Araba Koomson the government is happy the “unnecessary wrangling” between Kosmos and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation is over.
He said the government is yet to communicate with Kosmos to find out reasons for the sudden shift in position.
He however said that the government did not put any pressure on Kosmos to terminate the contract with Exxonmobil.
