English Premier League side Sunderland are keen on signing Ghana’s World Cup star Asamoah Gyan.
The Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has asked Sunderland fans to trust him to replace Kenwyne Jones with a “top class striker”.
And the Rennes star Gyan, 24, who scored three goals at the World Cup, is being lined up for a switch to the Stadium of Light.
Fenerbache failed to clinch his signature last week and Rennes have admitted a large bid would tempt them to sell.
Sunderland will haggle for a deal around the £10 million mark if owner Ellis Short releases fresh funds.
Bruce revealed yesterday that he sold Kenwyne Jones to Stoke because he’d “reached his sell by date” and needed to rediscover the “fire in his belly.”
It is understood the £8 million fee will be paid in instalments meaning Sunderland will not get an immediate lump sum to reinvest in Gyan.
Bruce is making progress in the transfer markets but Danny Welbeck, who signed on a season loan from Manchester United yesterday will not be Jones’ direct replacement.
Bruce says he’ll get the Jones cash to rebuild – and wants to land one of the goal scoring stars of the World Cup.
Gyan is young and full of energy and pace, something Jones was lacking in recent months.
Sunderland have brought in seven players this summer including Welbeck, Nedum Onuoha, Titus Bramble, John Mensah, Gyan’s international team mate, and Cristian Riveros who scored for Paraguay this week and will finally arrive to join his new club today.
