A stunner from Philippe Coutinho helped knock Manchester United out of the Europa League as Liverpool made the quarter-finals with a 1-1 draw, and a 3-1 win on aggregate.
The Reds are now England's only representatives in the competition - and their comprehensive outclassing of their old rivals heaps more pressure on under-fire United manager Louis van Gaal.
However, the Dutchman's side turned in a much-improved performance in a match that saw plenty of attacking football and hatfuls of chances created, and they opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark when Anthony Martial won and then converted a penalty after a foul from Nathaniel Clyne.
But Coutinho drew Liverpool level with a wonderful goal with the last kick of the first half, scything through the United defence and dinking a ball over David De Gea from an acute angle.
That left United requiring three goals in the second half, and despite the best efforts of Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, they failed to find the necessary cutting edge.
