The mother-union for the workers of Ghana International Airlines, the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union has described the lay-off of some 140 of the airline’s staff as null and void because due process was not followed.
The airline’s board last week asked the staff to stay home because it was unable to pay their salaries, already in arrears for four months.
According to the ICU, the workers are technically still in the employment of the national carrier until they are properly settled.
Deputy Secretary General, Solomon Kotei told Joy Business the ICU is therefore hoping to commence negotiations with management of the national carrier.
He said it was circumstances within the airline which prevented the workers from carrying out their duties and not the wish of the workers to stay at home.
He said if the management wants to sever relations with the workers there has to be thorough negotiations and the necessary payments.
“By (as in the view of) the law they are still workers of the GIA and they are working until the date of conclusion of the negotiations.
“…For now management is owing the workers four months of salaries in arrears that have not been paid,” he emphasized.
