Ghana has been adjudged the 5th best country in the ongoing World Cup by the Federation of Football Association (FIFA).
This was disclosed by the Ghana Football Association, President Kwesi Nyantakyi in an interview with sit-in host of the Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Bernard Nasara Shaibu.
Ghana bowed out gracefully at the quarter-finals stage of the World Cup after a 4-2 penalty defeat to Uruguay in a match that was replete with controversy.
Uruguay’s Luis Suarez grabbed a goal-bound header in a final embers of extra time. And even though he was sent off, he was rewarded for cheating in the final analysis as Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty kick and denying Ghana an historic semi-final place in the World Cup.
That notwithstanding, Ghana has been named as the fifth best team for their sterling performance, just behind the semi-finalists- Uruguay, Germany, Holland, and Spain.
Before Ghana’s elimination, Mr. Nyantakyi said Ghana was again voted as the best tactical side in the tournament.
The West African country bagged a total of $14 million for proceeding to the quarter final stage of the competition.
Giving the breakdown, Mr. Nyantakyi said Ghana was given $8 million for qualifying for the World Cup, $1 million for qualifying into the last sixteen and another $5 million for making it to the quarter finals.
