The Ghana Inter-bank Payment and Settlement System (GhIPSS) has begun an aggressive drive to enroll people who work around the major transport terminals onto the national biometric platform.
More than 2,300 drivers and their mates as well as traders at the Kaneshie, Achimota and Tema Station terminals have so far been issued with e-zwich cards.
Most of the beneficiary drivers tell Joy Business it saves them the trouble of where to deposit their proceeds at the end of the day as the banks are usually closed by the time they knock off.
One of the officials at the Tema Station driver’s union, Pattinson Asare told Joy Business the cards have been of immense benefit to them.
"It is helping the drivers, some of the traders and some of the passengers who understand the use of e-zwich cards."
“...Every month they ask for bank reconciliation,” he said.
GhIPSS is also installing Point of Sale devices at all the major terminals across the country so travelers could load their monies onto the cards before they embark on their journeys and retrieve them on arrival.
This should minimize the risk of them losing monies to highway robbers.
