Ghana has initiated an agreement with the Indian government for the large scale production of fertilizer with natural gas from the Jubilee Field.
The Ministers of Energy and Agriculture signed on behalf of government, whiles the Secretary of Agriculture in India Han Krishner signed for the Indian government.
Minister of Agriculture, Kwesi Ahwoi says the low use of fertilizer by farmers has been a main source of concern for government.
“Our farmers are not used to applying fertilizer to their crops . In fact the statistics say that Ghana is the least applicator of fertilizer.
"When other countries in Asia and the Far East are applying about 100-120 kilograms fertilizer per hector, Ghana is applying about 8 kilograms per hector.
“Definitely your yield per acre, therefore, will be that constrained and that explains our output as far as food and raw material demands are concerned are that restricted,” he said.
