Professor David Millar, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS) has appealed to government to impose taxes on Fulani herdsmen.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at a national desertification forum held in Bolgatanga, the Pro Vice Chancellor explained that the migrant headsmen are tasked heavily by the Nigerein, Burkinabe and Malian authorities.
He said herdsmen had seen Ghana as a safe-haven because their cattle graze free of charge.
Prof Millar said an imposition of tax on the Fulani's would reduce their number in the country.
He asked the district assemblies especially those in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions to take advantage of the situation to increase revenue base.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor said the ECOWAS Protocols made it difficult to do away with the Fulani Headsmen in the country, but when the taxes do not favour them they would exit.
Speaking on the topic: "Cultural practices and indigenous knowledge in Desertification and Drought Control in Northern Ghana - Case Study of Traditional Authorities and Community Members," Professor Miller said one of the best ways to protect the environment and prevent desertification is to empower traditional authorities and communities to venture into alternative means of livelihoods.
He said traditional authorities as custodians of lands have the ability to deal with desertification and asked them to team up with other opinion leaders to fight the menace.
