By the time the World Cup is over in a month, close to 2,100 Ghanaians may be infected with HIV and another 1,300 pregnant women risk being infected with the disease.
Some 300 babies born within the same period are likely to contract the HIV virus.
These staggering revelations by the Director (Technical Services) of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr Richard Amenyah were made during a press conference to announce the Football against HIV & AIDS project championed by Sony Corporation, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency the Ghana AIDS Commission, as well as the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana, PPAG.
The project will provide the opportunity for Ghanaians in 18 rural communities to watch live the South Africa 2010 World Cup matches on giant screens while offering counseling on HIV/AIDS related issues.
Mr. Amenyah said the figures were a breakdown of the 26,000 reported cases of infections in 2010 alone.
He said the Commission, together with Sony, JICA and PPAG, are taking advantage of the enormous entertainment the World Cup provides to fight the HIV pandemic.
“We are very happy that this engagement is taking place so that people in the remotest parts of the country that may not necessarily have the transport to travel to the next health centre and health post to have an HIV test done, today we are bringing testing to the door steps of people.
“They will enjoy their football and certainly enjoy the testing and counseling; they will be informed on how to get protected against HIV.
