Authorities of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital have announced it will replace all 13 lifts at the hospital.
The chief executive of the hospital,Professor Nii Otu Nartey, says the contract for the project will soon be awarded adding, the lifts will be replaced six weeks after the bidding is concluded.
He said government is supporting the project with an initial amount of 2.4 million Ghana Cedis.
The announcement of the lift-replacement project at Korle Bu follows a visit by President Mills to the hospital last week.
He is reported to have been forced to walk up the stairs because the lifts were out of order, a report hospital authorities have contested.
The malfunctioning lifts have been a perennial problem at the hospital. Patients are mostly forced to climb the six storey building for medical care.
An engineer at the surgical block Emmanuel Brakatu says power fluctuations are to be blamed for the breakdown of the lifts.
