Smart Chegabatia, Executive Secretary of the Civil Servants Association, has urged government to pay workers well to motivate them to work harder to generate higher productivity.
He expressed concern that workers were receiving low wages and salaries in the country and said it lowered their moral to work harder to enhance productivity.
Mr. Chegabatia, who was speaking at a public sector reform forum, held in Bolgatanga for both public and civil servants in the area, said "Productivity would increase three-fold if workers are paid well."
He also noted that the working environment for workers was not the best and this also affected productivity.
Mr. Chegabatia said "Many public and civil service Organaizations in this era of information communication technology, still work with manual typewriters and other outmoded office equipment. This adversely affects productivity."
He suggested that just as an entrepreneur could borrow money to acquire land, put up infrastructure and hire labour with the aim of maximizing profit, Government should equally do so.
Mr. Chegabatia appealed to the Ministry of Public Sector Reforms to hasten the implementation of the new Comprehensive Salary Structure.
He called on public and civil servants to form a common front to enable them to effectively champion their cause adding disunity and discrimination were hampering the ability of the two categories of workers to fight for their rights.
Mr. Chegabatia entreated workers to work harder to justify their demands and to study the labour law and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission Bill to enable them to know the channels to use in fighting for their rights.
