The First Trust G6 tournament is now not just about the fiesta of football and its related entertainment, but also the platform where Ghanaian match officials will have their maiden experience with FIFA's latest invented system for the knight of the whistles called Referee Paging System.
The system allows assistant referees to send electronic signals to the attention of the referee by the press of a knob on their flags which is received by a gadget on the bicep of the referee. This helps match officials to take quicker decisions and resolve controversial incidence with promptness.
FIFA referee instructor and vice chairman of the Referees Committee of the Ghana Football Association, Joseph Wellington explains more to Pulse Sports about the system.
"It is a very important instrument for the referees. It's an equipment for assistant referees and the referees at large. It's just like the communicator, but in this case it beeps so that it draws the referee's attention to an incident. When there is a late call for offside, substitutions, an incident closer to the assistant referee and the referee is not aware of it, this is the system that is used to communicate well with them. This is a very new thing that FIFA has come out with and we are using it in this particular tournament," he said.
He also revealed that match officials for the G6 will be taken through a dress rehearsal with the system before using it in their assigned matches.
"This is the first time that we are using it so tomorrow morning (Wednesday) we'll go through it with the referees who will do the first game as well as the referees who will be doing the second game so that they can become abreast with it. It is very important to our game and this tournament" Wellington affirmed.
Meanwhile the vanishing spray is also available for referees to use to demarcate the spot for the ball for free kicks and the line for the human wall.
