The Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District Director of Health Services, Dr. Luiz Amoussou has appealed to Traditional Birth Attendants TBAs) to be committed to their work to help reduce maternal death in the district.
Dr. Amoussou made the appeal during a day's orientation workshop for 47 Traditional Birth Attendants organised by the district directorate of the Ministry of Health at Breman Asikuma.
They were taken through topics including causes of maternal death, benefits of the Health Insurance Scheme and their relationship with trained midwives in the communities.
Dr. Amoussou said most maternal mortalities were due to delays in attending anti-natal by pregnant women and urged the attendants to send cases above them to the hospitals very early to save lives.
He urged them to educate their clients about the signs of danger in pregnancy and the need to attend anti-natal clinics.
The District Director told the attendants to remember that they are serving their own people and their good work would earn them a good name.
He appealed to them to educate the people especially women to register with the National Health Insurance Scheme to enable them to receive free medical care.
Dr. Amoussou commended the attendants for the good work they are doing and said between January and April 2007, Traditional Birth Attendants in the district have been able to handle 302 safe deliveries and urged them to keep that record.
